How to make Homemade Laundry Detergent in Less Than 5 Minutes!

We like to MAKE our laundry detergent for a few reasons.
  • We want to save our money
  • We want to be good to the earth that God gave us and making our own detergent causes less waste in the environment

If you would like to make your own powder detergent at home, you will need:
Blender (food processor)
Plastic container (to hold new detergent)
1 cup of ground up soap (equates to about 1 bar of Ivory or 1/4 bar of Zote)*
1/2 cup of Borax
1/2 cup of Oxygen Cleaner (Oxi-Clean or Arm & Hammer Washing Powder)

Mix all ingredients together.

Use 1 or 2 tablespoons every time you wash. This recipe will yield enough for 32 to 64 loads depending on how much you use each time, which equates to about $0.03 per wash!

We use this for ALL of our clothes including our infant's clothes.

*You can find Zote or Fels Naptha in the laundry aisle at your grocery store

  1. Hey guys. Where did yall get this recipe? I'm wondering if it's "organic" as in free of all the bad stuff. I'm not familiar with some of the ingredients like borax and zote.

  2. I don't know if it's really "organic" but Borax is "all natural" and is found in many "green" recipes. Zote is a laundry soap that if ingested may cause nausea but has "no toxicity problems" according to their website. You don't have to use Zote, though. I use it but also also alternate with Ivory. You could experiment with other organic soaps.

I got this recipe last year when we were really trying to cut our expenses, reduce waste, and cut out "bad" stuff from our home. I did a search for "make natural laundry detergent" and this is what I found.
